PRFS Pressure Relief and Flare System Studies

End-to-End Relief System Assessment & Engineering Support

IMG 1383
PLC has executed relief system studies at brownfield & greenfield facilities, with 1,000’s of pressure relief devices sized.

A flare study is a critical technical assessment for oil and gas facilities, ensuring the flare system operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with environmental regulations. This analysis evaluates radiation, dispersion, and combustion performance, while identifying risks to personnel and equipment. Beyond safety, a flare study can uncover opportunities for optimization, such as implementing flare gas recovery systems to reduce emissions and improve sustainability.

In a recent gas plant flare study, our team identified key issues impacting system reliability, including excessive backpressure on relief valves, high vibration risks in piping segments, and low-temperature exposures below material design limits. Addressing these concerns not only prevents mechanical damage and fatigue failures but also ensures long-term integrity and regulatory compliance.

Why Clients Choose PLC for Flare Studies

IMG 0494
PLC’s PRFS studies are thoroughdetailed and can include development of complete construction friendly mitigation plans, such as replacement and/or modified relief devices, pipe routing, support design, and/or administrative controls, meeting API, OSHA, ASME, NFPA and client standards.

Our nameplate and revalidation studies ensure your pressure-relief systems remain safe, compliant, and optimized for changing process conditions. These evaluations include a full review of impacted pressure relief devices to accommodate increased unit throughput or duty changes, delivering updated specifications and documentation aligned with current codes and industry standards. Each study provides a comprehensive overpressure protection analysis, covering all credible scenarios such as blocked flow, thermal expansion, and external fire exposure. We deliver detailed reports with scenario credibility, MAWP verification, capacity analysis, and precise calculations for relief rates and discharge conditions. Additional services include pipe stress analysis for large PRVs or low-temperature discharges, as well as vent header and disposal system modeling for enhanced safety and reliability. The result? Cost savings for our clients and full compliance with the latest standards.

IMG 1391
Our pipe stress analysis service is designed to protect your facility’s piping systems from overstress and potential damage, ensuring safe and reliable operation throughout their design life. Using advanced tools like CAESAR II, we evaluate stresses caused by pressure relief events, thermal expansion, and low temperature discharge scenarios. This analysis identifies conditions that could lead to fatigue, leaks, or catastrophic failure and provides actionable recommendations to mitigate these risks. Beyond preventing failures, pipe stress analysis helps optimize design by selecting the right materials and supports, reducing costs while maintaining compliance with stringent industry codes and standards. Combined with dispersion modeling for safe atmospheric venting, our approach delivers enhanced safety, regulatory assurance, and long-term operational integrity for your facility.

Comprehensive Relief System Evaluation

Our team was engaged to conduct a full relief system study for a large-scale gas processing facility located in Loving County, TX.

This project included a detailed evaluation of all pressure-relief devices and low-pressure tanks, as well as a thorough assessment of the vent and disposal systems. In addition to the standard scope, flagged pump systems and potentially unprotected equipment were reviewed to ensure adequate overpressure protection.

Leveraging provided facility drawings and equipment & instrumentation documentation, we applied strategic assumptions to streamline the evaluation of less complex systems, such as thermal or duplicate configurations, enhancing overall efficiency. Stress analysis was scoped based on device sizing and included contingency to account for new relief device recommendations and MDMT piping concerns. Where data was unavailable, our team relied on proven experience to make informed assumptions.

This proactive and flexible approach ensures a robust and cost- effective evaluation, with scalability built in to accommodate additional scope as needed.
